Choose a defined audience and situation
Work with a credible local partner to understand the audience’s circumstances and existing knowledge. A session for first-time renters will need a different structure from one for community volunteers making referrals. Legal Services Corporation programmes include outreach and education alongside other services, illustrating that public information is one part of a broader support system rather than a replacement for representation.
Set a boundary between information and advice
Explain what the session covers, the jurisdiction involved, and the date of the materials. Plan how individual questions will be handled without encouraging people to disclose sensitive facts in a group. A disclaimer alone does not answer every professional-responsibility question. The presenter should consider the rules governing their role and have a suitable route for issues requiring individual assessment.

Teach one process people can follow
Use a fictional example to demonstrate the steps, documents, and decision points in a common situation. Make important qualifications visible. Plain-language guidance encourages organising information around the reader’s task; the same approach helps a workshop stay practical. Avoid giving a universal deadline or a form instruction when the answer depends on facts that the audience has not supplied.
Make participation and materials accessible
Ask about language, communication, venue, and format needs before the event. Offer an appropriate way to ask a question privately and obtain information afterwards. Keep handouts readable, dated, and manageable on a phone. Do not assume that every participant can print documents, scan a code, use an online portal, or remain after the advertised finish time.
End with realistic routes for further help
Explain which organisation handles which type of issue and how to check eligibility or availability. Verify referral information before distributing it. Ask participants what remains unclear and whether the intended next step is understandable. Use that feedback to improve the session; attendance alone does not establish understanding, and a workshop cannot promise that another provider will accept every case.
